Why a safe-word? AI voice-cloning tools can now reproduce a recognisable family member’s voice from as little as 30 seconds of audio — lifted from social media, voicemail greetings, or even brief phone calls. The cloning is good enough to deceive parents, grandparents, and children of all ages over a 1-3 minute “emergency” call. A shared safe-word breaks the scam: a real family member will know it; an AI clone (or a “hi mum” text scammer) cannot.

How safe-words defeat voice-cloning scams

The dominant 2026 UK family-emergency scam pattern is: criminal harvests 30-60 seconds of a target’s voice (from a social-media video, an answerphone greeting, or a brief reconnaissance call). They feed this to a commercial AI cloning service (which now costs £5-£50 / month for unlimited cloned voices). They generate a call to a family member — usually a parent or grandparent — with the cloned voice saying something like “Mum, I’m in trouble, I need £3,000 today, I can’t talk long”. The clone is good enough to convince almost anyone for 90 seconds. The scammer then redirects to a specific payment method (Faster Payments transfer to a mule account, or gift cards).

The safe-word defeats this in one question: “What’s our safe-word?”. The real family member will know it. The AI clone cannot. The criminal’s only options are: invent a guess (almost always wrong), claim “I’ve forgotten” (which itself is the signal), or hang up.

How to pick a good safe-word

The strongest safe-words have three properties:

  • Un-guessable from public information. Avoid: pet names, kids’ names, school names, birthdays, sports teams, favourite books / films. Anything visible on your or your family’s social media is out.
  • Memorable for the family but not obvious. Two random unrelated words combined work well (“velvet trumpet”, “copper carrots”, “ochre ladders”). A single unusual word works too if everyone can spell it.
  • Easy to say under stress. Avoid words that are hard to pronounce or could be misheard. Test it: can your grandparent say it back without hesitation?

Avoid: dictionary words alone, anything from your immediate family vocabulary, anything from a recently-watched film or read book, brand names, swear words (children will refuse to use them under stress).

How often to refresh

Every 6 months is the right cadence for most families. Sooner if: a family member has disclosed the safe-word to someone outside the family by mistake, anyone’s phone has been lost / stolen, or a phishing event has compromised a family member’s email. The 6-monthly calendar invite produced by this tool fires automatically.

Frequently asked questions

Should we tell elderly relatives?

Especially elderly relatives. They are the highest-value targets for voice-cloning scams, and the most likely to act on emotional urgency. Sit with them in person to explain. Print the card large and put it next to the phone they use.

What about children?

Children of school age should know the family safe-word. Frame it as “our family code word, like spies” rather than as a fraud-prevention tool — less frightening, equally effective. Use it not just for money but for unexpected adult pickups, unexpected sleepover changes, etc.

What if I forget the safe-word?

That’s why the printed card exists. Family members keep theirs near their phone or in their wallet. You yourself keep one too — in your password manager, on your fridge, in your wallet. It’s only useful if family members can recall it under stress, and the card removes the recall pressure.

What if a scammer learns the safe-word?

Then it’s no longer safe. Family rotates immediately. Set a new word and re-distribute cards. The 6-month rotation cadence limits damage even from undetected compromise.

Does this run on the website?

Yes. The safe-word and family-member names you enter live only in your browser’s localStorage. They’re never sent to SignalTools or anyone else. Once you’ve printed or saved your cards, you can clear the data by clicking “Start over”.

What this tool generates

  • One printable wallet-sized card per family member, personalised with their name + your name. Print them in one go on A4 / Letter paper.
  • A 6-monthly calendar reminder (.ics file, downloadable) so the whole family rotates the safe-word at the same time. Import into Google Calendar, Apple Calendar, Outlook, or any standard calendar app.
  • A copy-able plain-text version of the message you can share via family WhatsApp / Signal / Telegram chat.
