Spot fake Monzo fraud-alert and verification texts — and why a phone call from “Monzo” is always a scam

The Monzo impersonation pattern — and the rule that defeats it
Monzo is the UK’s largest neo-bank with over 12 million personal and business customers. Monzo’s customer-support model is genuinely different from high-street banks: Monzo doesn’t have a phone number for customer service or fraud reporting. All communication happens through the in-app chat. This is a deliberate design choice and it’s also the strongest defence against social-engineering scams: if someone on a phone call claims to be from Monzo, you know with certainty it’s a scam. No further reasoning needed.
Three Monzo scam-text variants currently in circulation
From: Monzo (spoofed sender ID)
Body: “Monzo: A transaction of £489.99 to AMAZON.CO.UK has been attempted. If this was not you, call 020 XXXX XXXX immediately.”
Red flags:
Monzo will never give you a phone number to call. Monzo doesn’t operate a fraud phone line, customer service phone line, or any phone line for retail customers. Every legitimate Monzo contact happens through the in-app chat.
When you call the embedded number, the criminal posing as “Monzo fraud” will walk you through moving money to a “safe account”. That account is theirs.
Spoofed sender ID lands in the same SMS thread as legitimate Monzo verification codes or activity alerts. Thread continuity isn’t authentication.
The single best test: if any communication claiming to be Monzo asks you to call or be called, it’s a scam.
From: Monzo (spoofed)
Body: “Monzo: Your account has been temporarily restricted pending verification. Restore access at: monzo-verify-uk[dot]com”
Red flags:
Monzo manages account verification exclusively through the Monzo app. Real notifications appear in the app’s home feed or in chat messages from the Monzo team. Real Monzo never sends customers to third-party verification domains.
The phishing page asks for your Monzo username, password, and a one-time verification code. The OTP is what the criminal needs to access your account from their device in real time.
Domain check. Real Monzo is monzo.com. Anything-Monzo-anything (monzo-verify-uk.com, monzo-secure.com, verify-monzo.com) is a clone.
Phone call claiming to be from Monzo fraud, often without a preceding text
The caller knows your full name and that you bank with Monzo. They explain there’s a fraudulent transaction in progress, walk you through opening the app, and at some point tell you to enable “screen sharing” or read out a verification code so they can “help you secure the account”.
Red flags:
Monzo will never phone you. Repeat: Monzo will never phone you. This is the single most useful fact about Monzo to remember. Anyone phoning you claiming to be Monzo is a criminal, regardless of caller ID, regardless of what they know about you.
Screen-sharing requests are designed to let the criminal watch you enter your password or read your OTP. Never enable screen-sharing for a caller, even if they sound official.
Personal details are not authentication. Your name, address and the fact you bank with Monzo are all available in data-breach markets. Knowing them doesn’t prove the caller is Monzo — it proves they have access to breach data.
How to verify a Monzo communication is real
Three rules. Apply all three:
If it’s a phone call, it’s a scam. Full stop. Monzo doesn’t phone customers. Hang up.
If it’s an SMS asking you to call a number, it’s a scam. Real Monzo SMS contains an OTP code or a link to open the app — never a phone number.
To check anything, open the Monzo app and use the in-app chat. Tap your profile, then Help — you’ll be in conversation with a real Monzo agent. This is the only authenticated channel.
If you’ve already transferred money or shared credentials
Open the Monzo app immediately and tap Help → Chat. Tell the agent you’ve been scammed; they can freeze the card, freeze pending transfers, and start the fraud claim. Monzo’s in-app fraud team is genuinely 24/7 and typically responds within minutes for fraud cases.
Use the phrase: “This was an authorised push payment scam. Please log it under the PSR reimbursement scheme.”
The PSR Mandatory Reimbursement Scheme requires Monzo to reimburse APP fraud victims up to £85,000 for transfers made after 7 October 2024 unless the bank can prove gross negligence. Submit the claim in writing within 13 months.
