Octopus Energy's rapid growth to millions of UK accounts has made it a frequent target for impersonation scams — fake refunds, fake “energy rebate” messages, and fake billing problems. This guide covers the patterns and how Octopus actually contacts its customers.

The 4 common Octopus scam patterns

1. Refund / rebate

"You're owed £150 energy refund. Click to claim." Credit-balance refunds at Octopus are visible in your account dashboard and processed via Direct Debit reversal — never via "click to claim" page.

2. Smart meter visit

"Mandatory smart meter installation; £200 missed-visit fee unless you confirm appointment." Real Octopus smart-meter visits are arranged via the app or octopus.energy. There are no missed-visit fees in the UK for smart meter installations.

3. Tariff change

"Your tariff is changing per Ofgem price cap. Update payment details to continue service." Tariff changes are notified by Octopus via email but don't require payment-detail re-entry; Direct Debits adjust automatically.

4. Octopus Referral phish

"Get £50 Octopus referral bonus — sign up via this link." Octopus DOES run a real and credible referral programme but legitimate referral links come from existing customers; emails offering bonuses through phishing links are scams.

Red flags

  • Email from any domain other than @octopus.energy
  • Urgency / deadline language
  • Generic "Dear Customer" greeting (real Octopus knows your name)
  • External link asking you to enter password or bank details
  • Phone number that isn't 0808 164 1088 or visible on octopus.energy

How real Octopus Energy contacts you

Knowing how Octopus genuinely communicates makes the fakes easy to spot. Genuine Octopus emails come from an octopus.energy address, and your account is managed in the Octopus app or by signing in at octopus.energy — typed into your browser yourself, not opened from a link in a message.

Octopus will not send you a text or email with a link demanding card details to “release a refund” or fix a billing problem. A genuine credit on your account is simply applied to the account; you do not claim it through a link.

The “energy rebate” trap: when government energy-support schemes are running, scammers send fake messages telling you to “claim” a rebate or discount. Government energy support is applied automatically through your supplier — it is never something you claim by entering bank details on a linked page. Ofgem, the energy regulator, does not contact individual consumers to arrange rebates either; any message claiming to be from “Ofgem” about a payment is a scam.

If a message about your energy account looks plausible, do not use its link. Check directly in the Octopus app, or contact Octopus through the official number or in-app chat on octopus.energy.
